We have all been through moments so embarrassing that we have wished the ground would swallow us up whole. We might perhaps have just the solution for you. A shield that makes you invisible. Interested?

Thanks to the invisibility shield, developed by the British start-up Invisibility Shield Co, our dreams of becoming invisible are now possible. No more hiding at parties if you happen to bump into your ex – At least, if you are OK with walking about everywhere with this shield under your arm, which is not as easy as all that, you’ll see.

In truth, the innovation rests on the optical illusion principle. You would have thought it came straight out of Harry Potter. However, there is a perfectly good scientific explanation. ‘Lenses are positioned vertically in such a way that anything located at a distance from the observer is made a lot brighter […] and the objects situated closer to the panel disappear,’ explains the magazine L’Usine Nouvelle.

Our recommendations for a guaranteed effect

An optical illusion is thus created on the shield’s outer surface, making invisible anything which is just behind it. Nevertheless, this invisibility could be improved because the image rendering obtained is relatively blurred. If the person behind the shield begins to move, they will be spotted immediately. In addition, the quantity of differently coloured items of clothing you wear will affect the camouflage effect. So, just a little tip to make sure you get the full effect: don’t dance the rumba dressed in your finest multicoloured outfit.

According to the designers, other invisibility shields have already been trialled earlier. But such levels of optical illusion effectiveness have never been achieved before. And contrary to what one might think, it needs no electrical or electronic devices to be operated.

The company offers two types of shield. One of average size (95 cm by 65 cm), on sale for around 360 Euros, and one of miniature size (31 cm by 21 cm), available for the modest sum of 60 Euros. The product has been on sale since the end of 2022.

You now know the ultimate secret for passing by unnoticed – And if you intend to use it to go and rob your local bank, you never got the info from us, OK?
